Great Lakes Regional Preview - NCAA D1 XC Great Lakes RegionalPublished by
Once again the Great Lakes Region is deep. Unfortunately for Wisconsin coach Mick Byrne it may be deep enought to break the Wisconsin men's streak of 11 straight titles. The Badger's streak of winning 14 straight Big-10 titles has already been broken. #11 Indiana men won the Big-10 title over #16 Michigan and #19 Wisconsin. The change in distance to 10k may suit the Badgers (fourth at the Wisconsin Adidas Invite) better although Indiana ran as a pack at Big-10 with their top four finishing in the first ten. #22 Notre Dame will also battle for an automatic spot but considering the strong record during the year, two teams may get at-large bids. Indiana State sophomore John Mascari just won his second straight Missouri Valley title and he is the top returner from last year's meet (seventh) and he was eleventh at the NCAA D1 Pre-Nationals and sophomore Matt McClintock was eighth in this meet last year, 6th at this year's pre-Nationals and he was the runner-up behind Big-10 freshman champion Malachy Schrobilgen of Wisconsin. #6 Michigan State women have run well all year. Led by Junior Leah O'Connor, she was the runner-up at the Big 10 meet to freshman Erin Finn of #14 Michigan. Michigan State won the Big-10 title and they were fourth at the Wisconsin Adidas Invite through pack running. #9 Butler and #21 Notre Dame will also battle for automatic bids and the region will also likely garner two of the 13 at-large bids. #32 Indiana is not too far out to get one of those at-large bids. |
