Josie Schaefer, a graduate student-athlete and All-American at Wisconsin, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing May 13-14 in the women's shot put and discus throw finals at the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Ind. Schaefer is seeking the first conference title of her career, along with becoming the first Wisconsin female competitor to capture the Big Ten shot put or discus crown since Kelsey Card in 2016. She enters the meet as the collegiate leader in the shot put, along with No. 2 in the U.S. and sixth in the world this year at 62-3.25 (18.98m), elevating her to the No. 6 outdoor performer in NCAA history. Schaefer revisits the final home meet of her career May 5 and producing a lifetime-best 188-3 (57.39m) in the discus, along with examining her quest to surpass 200 feet. She analyzes the depth of the event in the conference, led by Ohio State's Faith Bender, along with Indiana's Jayden Ulrich, Iowa's Kat Moody and Michigan's Corinne Jemison. Schaefer reflects on the contributions of former Ohio State star and NCAA Division 1 shot put champion Adelaide Aquilla, and how her presence helped create an elite environment in any competition. She also speaks about the impact Swedish shot put record holder Axelina Johansson of Nebraska has had on the Big Ten and the NCAA, and how meaningful it is to have a pair of top 10 athletes in collegiate history in the same conference, along with two of the top 10 competitors in the world squaring off in the Big Ten, regional and Division 1 finals. Schaefer shares how significant it will be to have her younger brother Jacob also competing at the Big Ten championship meet, and she expresses gratitude for the support received from family, along with the Baraboo program and Wisconsin coaches and teammates. She also speaks about how meaningful the collaboration has been with Badgers' throws coach Dave Astrauskas and how he has been instrumental in helping Schaefer prepare for not only the collegiate season, but the USATF Outdoor Championships in July at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Schaefer also highlights how inspiring it is that the U.S. has four entries for the World Athletics Outdoor Championships in Budapest, Hungary, with Chase Ealey being the reigning shot put gold medalist, and her quest to be competing internationally in August.
